As Julia Hub aims to expand its user base a key business challenge is to create a platform that not only attracts new users but also ensures that they seamlessly integrate into the Julia Hub ecosystem and it’s various applications built for various use cases.
The aim is to promote not only first-party apps but also applications created by users and third-party developers. This approach aligns with the concept of an app store, fostering a comprehensive ecosystem within their cloud platform.
For tech-savvy and non-tech savvy users
This design caters to both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy users. The primary user personas include software engineers for application development, data scientists for analysing and storing large datasets, and Teachers, students, & general users interested in learning and sharing Julia programming code through notebooks and projects. Most of the user base is highly educated and in the age range of 20-60.

The platform faced dual challenges, each with its unique complexities. Firstly, there were concerns among students and teachers regarding the sharing of notebooks (web applications running code on the cloud). To address this, we revamped the notebooks page, enhancing the discoverability of related notebooks.

Additionally, we introduced a featured notebook section for administrators to spotlight to all users. The previous design lacked a clear structure when multiple notebooks were involved, prompting us to implement a comprehensive directory system for notebook management

We initiated the process by overhauling the navigation system and refining the Information Architecture (IA). Analysing the existing IA, we outlined potential features for inclusion in the redesign. Subsequently, we delved into ideation for the implementation of a dedicated projects section, complete with a shared code repository.

We presented various options to stakeholders, finalised a set of features, and commenced the design phase. Throughout, our emphasis remained on creating responsive designs for all web screens. Following an initial feedback round with stakeholders, we engaged in discussions with developers to initiate the implementation phase.
